MARS as large as full moon??? BULL SHIT!!!

I’ve lost count of how many times I get e-mail like this, I also lost count of how many times I saw people posting such thing on forums…

“MARS IS GOING TO LOOK AS BIG AS MOON!”

OR

“DOUBLE MOON IN THE SKY”

The e-mail started to circulate many many years ago. Each year, they change the title from AUGUST 2004, to 2005, 2006… then 2008, till now 2009. The e-mail claimed the MARS will look as big as Full Moon with our naked eyes.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That’s pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Planets in our Solar System pull by unseen gravity of The Sun and other planets. The “order” of planet’s orbit can’t be disrupted. Due to the shape of the orbit (not a perfect round shape), MARS will sometimes slightly closer to earth. It is only SLIGHTLY, but not that close until it appears as big as Full Moon.

Just imagine if MARS is close enough to be seen as big as a FULL MOON, i guess it should be doom day of our Mother Earth. The huge gravity from Mars at this distance will ripped the moon, the earth and ripped us apart, and nothing will be left on earth. The huge gravity force will make the two planets (Mars and Earth) to collide and we definitely have no MOOD to enjoy the VIEW. As the e-mail said: NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN… Coz there is no way our Earth can survive this!!!!!

The whole HISTORY of MARS as big as Full Moon story started in 2003 when Mars reported closest to earth at that time. However, it didn’t appear to be as big as moon at that time. I attended an activity organized by Planetarium Negara to observe Mars at nearest distance (56 million km away from Earth) in 2003. The Mars still look like a tiny little star. And we still need a GOOD TELESCOPE to view it.

Here’s a graph from Robin Scagell at Popular Astronomy (below) which shows how the distance from Earth to Mars varies over the next few decades, shown as the size that Mars will appear in the sky. 25 arc seconds is about half the apparent size of Jupiter in the sky, which is the largest that Mars appeared in 2003.
